Axial Flow Fan

Axial flow fans are a typical exhaust fan system that blows air along the axis of the fan. They are used to produce suction in the paint booth system so that the released dust particles or fumes can be removed easily. Axial flow fans are available in a wide range of designs depending upon blade width, shape, number of blades, and tip speed.

An axial flow fan is a mechanical device that blows air along the axis of the fan, linearly. The axial flow fans are mainly designed to remove dust and fumes at workplaces. They are used in a number of industries along with a paint booth system to generate the required amount of suction and helps in removing dust and fumes released. In many industries, due to long ducts, conventional exhaust fans are not suitable for a high resistance system that’s why axial flow fans are used. The axial flow fan consists of blades that force air to move parallel to the shaft about which blades rotate.

As its name says, an axial flow moves air parallel to the axis of rotation. Axial flow fans are suitable for low resistance, high flow applications. On the other hand, centrifugal flow fans move air perpendicular to the axis of rotation and suitable for high-pressure resistance, low flow conditions. Different type of axial flow fans are used for different applications and the most common type of axial flow fan have a diameter less than 14 ft. and four blades.

A normal axial flow man is very economical and compact in size, imparts motion to the air in the axial and rotational direction. The rotating component in an axial flow fan is called swirl. By using Down Stream Guide Vanes (DSGV), Swirl can help in dissipating required useful static pressure. DSGV can increase 10-15% static pressure so that higher efficiency can be achieved.

Axial flow fan in Paint Booth

Paint booths are constructed to protect workers and the environment while painting machines. They remove overspray and paint droplets so that a uniform layer of paint can be obtained. In paint booths exhaust system is used to remove dust and fumes. The most typical fan which is used for this purpose in an axial flow fan. Axial flow fan is also known as Duct Fans, Axial Flow Fan, or Axial Blower. An axial flow fan produces the required suction which is necessary for removing unwanted dust and fumes from the paint booth and results in a cleaner working environment.

In a paint booth, an air exhaust connection is made at the top or back of the booth, behind the filters for the ductwork. This makes the duct connection with the axial flow fan much easier. Axial flow fans produce the required suction and allow the large supply of air that is necessary for getting face velocities required for proper ventilation of paint booths. The axial flow fans do not produce much noise, they require less horsepower. Also, they do not require additional dust work transition section as that of centrifugal fans. In a paint booth, there is a fear of explosive condition remains due to any buildup of paint, which may result in a spark.

To prevent this condition, a spark resistance is provided to the axial flow fan. Thus, every axial flow fan used in a paint booth must have spark resistant so that if any metal part hit the propeller, it will reduce the chance of generating a spark and prevent any type of explosion to take place.

Construction of an axial flow fan

An axial flow fan casings are made by rolled and flanged mild steel sheet that is hot-dip galvanized after manufacture. Standard finishing is given to the sheet and its other accessories. The axial flow fan casing encloses the impeller along with a motor completely. In an axial flow fan, a motor is wired into the external terminal box with the flexible terminal weatherproof conduit, and a separate earthing screw is also provided to it. An inspection hatch is also available on the smaller fans. A flameproof or safety motor is also wired outside of the case and left with a length of lead so that the operator can connect to their own terminal box according to their requirements.
